Introduction to Sewing

Never touched a sewing machine but always wanted to learn? Or perhaps the last time you sewed was in Home Economics and need a refresher on threading the machine. Taking our Sew 101 class will get you to the beginner level in just 3 hours! In this beginner class you will learn how to wind a bobbin, sew a straight line, and a variety of basic stitches to get you started on your sewing journey!

  • Selection of fabrics for all three projects
  • Sewing Tutorials
  • 1 x bobbin

Supply List: 

  • 500m spool of black or white polyester thread (Must be Gutterman, Mettler, or Coats)
  • Dressmaking pins (Glass, Pearl, or Plastic head)
  • Hand sewing needles
  • Thread snips or scissors
  • Tailors chalk, wax, or fabric marking pen

**Bring a few loved pieces in need of repair from your wardrobe to alter in the last session.

Course Outline

Class 1: Down to Basics & Bucket Organizer **subject to change

    Get acquainted with the sewing machine and basic tools of the trade. Learn how to thread a machine, sew in a straight line and a few other stitches. Apply these techniques by making a bucket organizer for your home.

      Class 2: Tote Bag

        Make a multi-purpose tote and learn about topstitching, reinforcement stitching, and how to finish raw seams.

          Class 3: Zipper

            Step it up a notch and throw a zipper into the mix. Expand your skills by inserting a zip into a lined wash bag and add hand sewing onto your resume.

              Class 4: Basic Alterations

                From hemming to taking in side seams for a better fit, gain valuable skills to help you alter and repair your clothes.**
